How much stake a validator needs to break even

The panel above already works this out for whatever you type in — it prints a break-even stake and how far above or below it you are. It does that in JavaScript, though, so the answer exists only for readers who run the tool. These are the common cases in plain text, from the same live figures.

Voting is the cost that does not scale. A validator pays for every vote it casts: one transaction per slot, 5,000 lamports a signature, 432,000 slots an epoch. That is 2.16 SOL per epoch — about 477 SOL a year, near $48,393 at today's price. The bill is identical whether you have ten thousand SOL delegated or a million, which is what makes small validators uneconomic rather than merely less profitable.

Commission (inflation / MEV)Stake needed to cover costs
0% / 0%~102,000 SOL
5% / 0%~71,000 SOL
5% / 5%~71,000 SOL
10% / 10%~54,000 SOL

Assumes a $1,000-a-month server, the default in the panel above; at $300 the first row falls by about a fifth. At 0% on both streams the only income left is what the protocol pays the block producer — priority and signature fees, which the validator keeps in full — so the threshold is highest there. That is the arithmetic behind a claim you will see on validator sites, this one included: a 0% fee is sustainable above a certain size and hollow below it.

These are network averages. Your own skip rate, the share of slots you are assigned and the SOL price all move the line; the panel above lets you put your numbers in. For where the rewards themselves come from, see Solana staking rewards and APY explained.
